STPM results show improvement in Cumulative Grade Point Average

PETALING JAYA: The Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) 2020 examinations saw an improvement in the Cumulative Grade Point Average.

The CGPA improved with a score of 2.78 compared to 2.77 in STPM 2019.

Malaysian Examinations Council (MEC) member Datuk Dr Wahid Razzaly said this is an improvement of 0.01.

“However, in terms of the candidates’ overall achievement, the achievements of STPM 2020 candidates are considered the same as that of STPM 2019 because the improvement is small.

“This difference in improvement does not illustrate a significant one for STPM 2020 candidates as a whole, compared to the STPM 2019 candidates,” he said during a virtual press conference on Thursday (July 1).

He said a total of 741 candidates (or 1.72%) scored a CGPA of 4.00 and from the 741, a total of 554 (or 74.76%) candidates are from low-income families.

A total of 23 candidates scored 5As in all five subjects they took, he said, a drop from 42 candidates in STPM 2019, while 718 obtained 4As in STPM 2020, also a drop from 760 candidates in STPM 2019.

The number of candidates who scored a CGPA of 4.00 too, he said, has reduced from 802 in the previous year.

“Overall, the number of candidates who scored a CGPA of 4.00 - which is all As in the five subjects or four subjects they took - have reduced from 802 candidates in STPM 2019 to 741 candidates. This is a drop of 61 candidates (or 7.61%). There’s an improvement in the number of candidates who obtained a CGPA of 3.09; from 33.45% in 2019 to 33.69% in 2020," said Wahid

Wahid also said that all 23 subjects offered in the STPM 2020 examinations recorded a passing rate of more than 70%.

The setting of the STPM 2020 standard was implemented efficiently, he said, through the STPM 2020 Certification Committee Meeting, with advice from and supervision of the Cambridge Assessment International Education, UK.

“This continuous advice and supervision is aimed at maintaining the standards that have been implemented since the STPM 1982 and because STPM is accepted globally,” he added. - Star
