Tax collection from "special draw" operated by the number betting industry has declined in recent years.
According to the Finance Ministry's written reply to Seremban MP Loke Siew Fook, the amount of taxes collected from "special draw" are as follows:
2019: RM113.29 million
2020: RM72.53 million
2021:(up to Sept): RM36.88 million
Collections for 2021 as of September is roughly half of what was collected the year before.
The Finance Ministry said that the revenue was channelled to the Special Revenue Trust Account operated by the Finance Ministry.
Commenting on the Finance Ministry's reply, Loke wrote on Facebook that there was no transparency in how the trust account was spent.
The number betting industry are allowed to collect bets for three "regular draws" a week.
The "special draw" was introduced in 1999 under the BN administration to raise funds for victims of the Nipah virus outbreak.
There were 22 "special draws" in 2018, which takes place on certain Tuesdays.
The Pakatan Harapan administration reduced the frequency of the "special draw" to 11 in 2019 and eight in 2020.
Under the Muhyiddin Yassin- administration, the number of "special draws" were restored to 22.
PAS has urged Putrajaya to cancel "special draws".
Tax collection from number betting operators is huge.
Between 2008 and 2012, Putrajaya collected RM6.3 billion, mostly from Sports Toto Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Magnum Corporation Sdn Bhd and Pan Malaysian Pools Sdn Bhd.
