Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik has lamented the unsatisfactory written parliamentary reply from Education Minister Radzi Jidin about the free breakfast programme for primary school students.
Maszlee had asked in the Dewan Rakyat whether the ministry intends to reintroduce the free breakfast programme for primary school students in 2022.
In the written reply dated Nov 15, 2021, Radzi said the cabinet had decided in a meeting on Jan 15 last year not to continue the programme.
Instead, the Education Ministry will continue implementing the supplementary food programme (RMT) and school milk programme (PSS).
The ministry believes these two programmes will positively impact the physical health and healthy eating habits of primary school students, specifically those from low-income households (B40).
Maszlee, the former education minister, took to Twitter today to express his dissatisfaction with Radzi’s answer.
“The question is whether the government of the day intends to reintroduce the free breakfast programme in 2022 as part of the post-Covid-19 recovery efforts.
“Why is the senior education minister just following the decision of the cabinet from the previous government in 2020 before Covid-19?” he tweeted.
Maszlee said the RMT only targets students who come from B40 households, whereas the free breakfast programme is meant for all students.
“For the rakyat and the teachers, I have tried to fight (for the free breakfast programme). Unfortunately, the ministry and the minister are uninterested in implementing the free breakfast programme,” he added.
Maszlee had often raised the issue of the free breakfast programme in the Dewan Rakyat this year, both during the question-and-answer sessions as well as during the debates. - Mkini
