The prices of Covid-19 self-test kits will now be as low as RM6.90, according to Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi.
He said the test kits will also be made available at more premises, including at certain supermarkets, convenience stores, and petrol stations.
Previously, most Covid-19 self-test kits were sold near the ceiling retail price of RM19.90. They were also mostly available through pharmacies.
Prior to that, each rapid antigen test kit was sold in the RM30 and RM40 range, depending on the brand.
Alexander announced the new policy after officiating the sale of Covid-19 self-test kits at a supermarket at KLIA2.
“The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry was told the prices offered at supermarkets and convenient stores are as low as RM6.90 each while, KK Supermart is selling them for only RM6.60 each.
“This is surely very good news to consumers in the light of the situation today,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.
Some stores have already begun advertising the sale of the test kits.
They include convenience store chain 99 Speedmart which said on Facebook that the AllTest brand will be available at their outlets.
The move to further reduce the price of self-test kits and expand its ability is part of an effort to make Covid-19 testing a norm as the virus becomes endemic.
On whether the ceiling price of RM19.90 will be brought down further, Alexander said a decision will be made soon.
Nanta said expanding the sale of the Covid-19 self-test kit is expected to further help bring down prices.
As of Oct 28, he said 2,570 business premises have been approved to sell the Covid-19 self-test kits. - Mkini
