Minister denies making light of sexual harassment claims

Communications and Multimedia Minister Annuar Musa has denied suggesting that the issue of sexual harassment within the local entertainment industry be taken lightly.

Taking to Facebook, Annuar claimed that a report in a local Malay daily today did not accurately reflect his views on the subject of sexual harassment.

"Myself and the ministry, we are concerned with the issue of sexual harassment and it is not a trivial matter.

"In fact, sexual harassment is a criminal offence," he said.

Annuar was responding to an Utusan Malaysia report this morning that quoted his views from a recent interview on exposés by several local entertainment industry players on harassment against artists, celebrities, and production crew.

Contrary to the report, which quoted Annuar as advising artists to not play up the issue, the Ketereh MP said he suggested for the interview to instead highlight his main focus to develop the local entertainment industry.

"This issue will not be resolved by targeting any parties, as it instead requires a joint effort by the media, authorities, and others involved.

"I have raised the issue with the police and I believe actions will be taken in accordance with the law," said Annuar.

Utusan also quoted local award-winning actor Shahili Abdan, known as Namron, as exposing that sexual harassment in the industry does not only affect women but there were also men who fell prey.

Further, actress Sharifah Amani Syed Zainal Rashid also said there were production crew members who had to face the same situation. - Mkini
