Selangor DAP chairperson Gobind Singh Deo said the party intends to contest an additional parliamentary seat and two state seats in the 15th general election (GE15).
The three seats which were contested by Bersatu as part of Pakatan Harapan in GE14 are the Tanjung Karang parliamentary seat as well as Semenyih and Selat Klang state seats.
Bersatu lost Tanjung Karang to Umno's Noh Omar but won the two state seats. Semenyih was then lost to Umno in a by-election following the death of Bakhtiar Mohd Nor.
According to Gobind (above), the party is talking to its allies in Selangor Harapan on this matter.
“Once we are given the chance to stand in those seats, we have to ensure we can win all the 18 seats (in Selangor).
“During the 2018 election, we won all 16 seats that we contested, we must win all as well in the next election,” he told over a thousand party representatives at the Selangor DAP annual congress today.
The congress conducted at the Shah Alam Convention Centre was attended by 1,116 delegates from 218 branches throughout the state.
The delegates will also elect their state party leaders today. Among 51 candidates standing in the party polls, only 15 leaders will be elected for the next three years.
The state party election is expected to be intense as it is reported that the incumbent Selangor DAP chief Gobind will be challenged by its incumbent state secretary Ronnie Liu and his team.
Stick to principles
Gobind also reminded party members that GE15 may happen anytime soon in view of the instability of Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's administration.
He was referring to the three-cornered fights between BN, Perikatan National (PN) and Harapan in the coming Malacca election.
While stressing the need to cooperate with allies in Harapan to win the next general election, Gobind said DAP must maintain its principles.
“It’s important because that’s what the people will judge us by,” he said.
The Puchong MP added that DAP is prepared to back the Anti-Hopping Act in Parliament and emphasised that it will not support party hopping as well as not welcome ‘traitors’.
Gobind also urged party members to unite and give their support to the party’s leadership, so that DAP and Harapan can retain power in Selangor and expand to other states as well as the federal government.
He said the party should come up with new strategies to access voters when contesting under limited conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Strengthening interaction with young voters is crucial given that Undi18 is going to be implemented next year," he added. - Mkini
