Veg price spike due to bad weather, low supply

Fama says the cost of transporting vegetables from other countries has also gone up.

PETALING JAYA: The increase in vegetable prices in Penang is due to bad weather, said the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama).

Penang Fama director Mohd Ridzuan Ab Ghapar said damage caused by heavy rain on vegetable farms in Cameron Highlands had resulted in low supply.

“The supply of imported vegetables has also decreased as a result of other countries also experiencing extreme weather conditions,” he said in a statement today.

The cost of transporting vegetable produce from other countries has also gone up.

Ridzuan said Fama had asked vegetable importers and wholesalers to provide information on their prices.

He was responding to the Consumers’ Association of Penang, which earlier today called on the domestic trade and consumer affairs ministry and Fama to investigate the spike in vegetable prices, fearing that suppliers were violating the Anti-Profiteering Act 2010.

The ministry’s enforcement section has said it was investigating the matter. - FMT
