PETALING JAYA: The Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council has urged Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and his Cabinet to give a full explanation for its failed flood management in a special parliamentary sitting.

PH said the floods had a “significant and heartbreaking” impact on the people, claiming nearly 50 lives and causing millions in damage.

“The voice of the people that’s been shared on social media is very loud in criticising the response of the Cabinet, which was very slow or seen as not really helping flood victims, including in Sabah, namely in Tenom in May, and Penampang in September.

“This phenomenon has opened our eyes to the reality that climate change and human activities, particularly logging, have a serious negative impact on the people,” it said in a statement today.

The council, comprising PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Upko president Madius Tangau, also urged the government to advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to set up a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) on the recent floods and to look into flood-related issues.

It said this was in line with the King’s comments that a post-mortem be conducted into the drainage system in the country to address urban flash flooding. - FMT
