PETALING JAYA: Two hundred budding lawyers will have the opportunity to chase their dream thanks to a RM2 million scholarship programme established by Advance Tertiary College (ATC) and Free Malaysia Today (FMT).
The FMT-ATC Scholarship programme covers foundation and degree courses in law, with bursaries of between RM1,000 and RM10,000 available for the Year 2022 intake.
Apart from scholarships for students from various academic backgrounds – ranging from those with Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) to those with South Australian Matriculation (SAM) – the programme also offers a 50% rebate on tuition fees at ATC for students who have represented their state in any sport. And those who have represented the country are eligible for a 100% rebate.
Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said officiated the launch of the scholarship yesterday, and in a brief speech, the former Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker called on ATC to focus on developing its students’ soft skills.
A lawyer by training, Azalina said selecting potential students purely based on their academic track record would be a disservice to the various soft skills they might have.
“I think when subjects are given to students, we can’t just give them traditional subjects as a requirement of entry or even a selection of personality…,” said Azalina, the special advisor (law and human rights) to the prime minister.
“I think that for Malaysia to grow, we must identify a lot with the younger generation, not only those who are ambitious but also those who emphasise a lot on creative thinking and being very critical.”
Meanwhile, ATC director Kevin Leong hoped the partnership with FMT would create more awareness about the scholarship programme and allow more students to benefit from it, adding that he was confident the scheme would continue to be “life-changing” for young Malaysians.
“It is always our greatest pride whenever we see a student on a scholarship scheme who has gone through the corridors of ATC graduate and become successful,” he said.
“They will be able to change the economic status of their families, and of course, contribute back to society.”
Leong also hoped the sports scholarships ATC was offering would encourage youths to participate in sports while studying in secondary school.
“Let’s say you’re not entitled for scholarships based on your academic qualification, if you have represented your state or the nation in sports, you can receive sports scholarships,” he explained.
Noting the key role that lawyers played in the promotion of democracy and justice, FMT managing director and CEO Azeem Abu Bakar said the news organisation was glad to be providing 200 aspiring lawyers help in getting access to education.
“Education changes lives, and today we are very fortunate to be presented with this opportunity to work with ATC on this scholarship programme for students who aspire to be lawyers,” he said.
“I was also a beneficiary of a scholarship programme, and because of that, I was able to pursue my studies in accounting and finance… It changed my life, it changed my future, and I am always thankful for that.”
“Today, we are able to do the same for 200 students…”
