MACC today confirmed that it is investigating bribery involving projects owned by Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, and that one of the suspects they have arrested include an executive of the Petronas subsidiary.
In a statement, the anti-graft agency also clarified that the Petronas Carigali officer they nabbed is not its chief executive officer as claimed by certain quarters.
Investigators have also arrested one more individual to facilitate a probe into the case since Friday (April 8), making the total number of arrests increase from eight to nine.
"This investigation is the outcome of cooperation and information sharing between MACC and Petronas, an exercise aimed at strengthening the integrity of the government-linked company.
"MACC also wishes to clarify that one of the nine individuals who have been arrested to facilitate investigation is a junior executive at Petronas Carigali and not its CEO as claimed by some.
"The other eight individuals arrested are the owner and senior executives of contractors and vendor companies which were involved in carrying out the projects," the statement said.
On Friday, it was reported that MACC has acquired remand orders against eight individuals in its probe into alleged bribery involving projects with a total worth of RM2.3 billion that belonged to a government-linked company (GLC).
Investigators also seized a number of luxury items, including 10 luxury cars, gold bars, and jewellery, 15 luxury watches, 13 handbags, and RM27,000 in cash.
On Sunday, Petronas issued a statement confirming that one of its employees had been picked up by MACC for suspected graft and said it is fully cooperating with the anti-graft body. - Mkini
