Shafee abandons bid to disqualify Sri Ram from prosecuting case

Senior lawyer Shafee Abdullah has filed a notice of discontinuance of his appeal to disqualify Gopal Sri Ram from prosecuting his RM9.5 million money laundering case.

PETALING JAYA: Senior lawyer Shafee Abdullah has abandoned his appeal to disqualify Gopal Sri Ram from prosecuting his RM9.5 million money laundering case.

He allegedly received the money from former prime minister Najib Razak in 2013 and 2014.

Shafee’s lawyer, Harvinderjit Singh, said Sri Ram, a former Federal Court judge, had not been attending the trial since it started in the High Court last year.

“The prosecution also indicated that Sri Ram will no longer attend the proceedings. The appeal is nugatory,” he told FMT in response to Shafee having filed a notice of discontinuance of his appeal scheduled to be heard before the Court of Appeal tomorrow.

Harvinderjit said they “got what they wanted as the application was essentially to disqualify Sri Ram from prosecuting Shafee”.

On April 23, 2019, High Court judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah ruled that he did not find any merit to suggest that Sri Ram was in conflict of interest or that he would be biased against Shafee.

Shafee had claimed trial in September 2018 to two counts of money laundering and two counts of making false statements involving RM9.5 million he received from Najib.

Deputy public prosecutor Afzainizam Abdul Aziz, who is now prosecuting Shafee before Judge Jamil Hussin, said the investigating officer would be called before the prosecution closed its case. - FMT
