GEORGE TOWN: A photo of two children with bruised faces eating at a food court here has led to police detaining their mother and a grandaunt over suspicion of child abuse.
Penang Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong said the photo of the two children — a three-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl — was posted on Facebook. This led to a police report being lodged by a member of the public.
He said when police tracked the children, they were found with wounds and swellings on their faces and body.
They were immediately referred to Penang Hospital for a check-up.
“We then arrested two local women, a 28-year-old who is the mother of the children, and a 52-year-old who is their grandaunt,” he said when contacted.
Soffian said the case is being investigated for child abuse under Section 31 of the Child Act 2001 and urged those with information about the matter to contact the Penang Northeast district police headquarters (IPD) at 04-218 1822.
He said the social welfare department is checking whether the children have a guardian within the family to take care of them, failing which the department would do so. - FMT
