Wednesday will still be a public holiday - PM

Wednesday will still be a public holiday for most states in the country.

This is after Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that the public holiday for Labour Day, which fell on Sunday (May 1), will be replaced on Wednesday (May 4).

Initially, the Labour Day holiday was supposed to be replaced on Monday (May 2) while the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays were expected to be on Tuesday (May 3) and Wednesday (May 4).

However, the Keeper of the Ruler's Seal yesterday announced that Hari Raya Aidilfitri will be on Monday (May 2) and Tuesday (May 3).

With the Labour Day replacement being moved to Wednesday, the rearrangement will maintain the status quo with Monday to Wednesday being public holidays.

However, this arrangement will only apply to states which have Saturdays and Sundays as weekends.

It will not apply to Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan and Johor which have Fridays and Saturdays as weekends.

This is because the states have already observed the Labour Day holiday on May 1 and will not require a replacement.

"This is in line with Section 3 of the Public Holidays Act 1951, the Holidays Ordinance (Sabah Cap 56) and Holidays Ordinance (Sarawak Cap 8)," Ismail Sabri said in a statement.

However, he said the holidays are subject to the decisions of the respective states.

Some states have decided to announce additional holidays to extend the holidays for the whole week during the Hari Raya season. - Mkini
