2 deaths in custody in Melaka, Penang

Bukit Aman said both detainees did not suffer from any physical injuries.

PETALING JAYA: Two custodial deaths have been reported in Melaka and Penang, bringing the total number of custodial deaths this year to 18.

In a statement, Bukit Aman said the 17th case involved a 50-year-old man who was held at the Jasin police station lockup for drug-related offences on June 17.

He was found unconscious in the lockup on June 23 and sent to Jasin Hospital for treatment before being transferred to Melaka Hospital.

He died at midnight on June 26 after being found unconscious in his ward. A post-mortem found no physical injuries on the deceased’s body, with intestinal bleeding attributed as the cause of death.

The 18th case involved a 42-year-old man who was detained at the lockup of the Nibong Tebal police station on June 22, also for drug-related offences.

At noon on June 26, the man complained about having stomach pains and was brought to  Sungai Bakap Hospital for treatment.

He was later sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital for further treatment but died the following day.

Bukit Aman said an autopsy found that he did not have any physical injuries, with the cause of death attributed to gastrointestinal bleeding and multiorgan failure.

Bukit Aman has given an assurance that the custodial deaths unit under its integrity and standards compliance department (JIPS) will continue probing both cases from all angles, before handing over its findings to the coroner.

Up until May 8, 16 custodial deaths had been reported since January this year. The 16th case involved a 48-year-old man who died in a police station lockup in Johor on May 8.
