2 deaths recorded daily last year while commuting to work, says Socso

PETALING JAYA: An average of two deaths caused by accidents while commuting to work were recorded every day for the whole of last year, the Social Security Organisation (Socso) has revealed.

A total of 32,976 road accidents were recorded nationwide in 2022 involving contributors, Socso deputy chief executive (operations) John Riba Marin said, Bernama reported.

And of that number, 651 were fatal, he said.

John said 45% of the deaths due to road accidents involved commuters aged 35 and below.

“This means that on average, every day two deaths were caused by accidents while travelling or commuting to and from work,” he was quoted as saying at the launch of a road safety campaign in conjunction with Aidilfitri at Dataran Kemerdekaan in Shah Alam.

Also present was Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan.

Meanwhile, Hussein said Selangor police would take action against those found playing with firecrackers and fireworks after midnight.

On the seven-day Op Selamat 20 that kicked off today, Hussein said police would focus on 62 congestion-prone hotspots and six accident-prone locations, especially in the suburbs. - FMT
