Subang chief’s remarks on Najib a personal view, says PAS veep

Idris Ahmad said Zaharuddin Muhammad (right) was probably giving his personal opinion about Najib Razak’s trial and pardon application.

PETALING JAYA: Remarks by a Selangor PAS leader about a royal pardon for Najib Razak do not reflect the party’s position on the matter, says PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad.

He said Subang PAS chief Zaharuddin Muhammad was probably giving his personal opinion that Najib’s trial did not follow “Islamic guidelines”, following revelations of an alleged conflict of interest pertaining to Justice Nazlan Ghazali.

Idris said the matter of Najib’s bid for a pardon was never discussed by the party’s central leadership.

“We (PAS leaders) never discussed it. We’re also not aware of what he’s written and said about it,” he said, according to Berita Harian.

In a video clip shared on TikTok, Zaharuddin had said that under Islamic law, a judge in a case like this should be agreed to by both the prosecution and defence.

He added that in Islamic law, judges do not have the power to reject evidence submitted by either party.

Zaharuddin, who is also the son-in-law of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, said that justice should be served by separating the judiciary and the executive.

A new judge who is agreed to by both parties should be appointed to the case instead of someone being appointed on the advice of the prime minister.

On April 6, law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said revealed that an investigation of Nazlan by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission had concluded that he had violated the Judges’ Code of Ethics and had a conflict of interest when presiding over the SRC International case.

Nazlan had found Najib guilty on charges of criminal breach of trust, abuse of power, and money laundering, and sentenced him to 12 years’ jail, and a fine of RM210 million. - FMT
