Kelantan Umno will consider severing ties with its Amanah counterpart if state Amanah chairperson Khalid Samad does not withdraw his plea for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to refuse Najib Abdul Razak’s pardon application.
“Kelantan Umno urges Khalid to apologise openly to Umno following his plea to the Agong to reject the pardon application for former prime minister Najib,” said state Umno chief Zawawi Othman in a statement today.
Zawawi (above) pointed out that Umno’s appeal to the ruler to pardon Najib was based on a unanimous decision by the party’s supreme council.
Khalid’s statement offended the feelings of Umno members, he added.
On April 27, it was reported that Khalid, who is Amanah’s communications director, said his party implores the Agong and the Pardons Board to reject the application for Najib to be pardoned and released from prison.
He said that is the only way to preserve the country’s image and its fight against abuse of power and corruption.
Najib is currently serving a 12-year jail sentence for his conviction in the SRC International case.
The Umno supreme council unanimously decided on April 7 to apply for a royal pardon for Najib.
They will also present the Agong with memoranda signed by all 191 Umno division leaders.
BN and Pakatan Harapan are currently working together in the federal government as well as in some state governments.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had also yesterday urged all quarters to stop making inappropriate comments on the party’s bid to seek a pardon for Najib.
“Let’s leave the matter to the Agong as he has the prerogative.
“I do not welcome views from any organisations, what more from friendly political parties making inappropriate comments,” he was reported as saying. - Mkini
