Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today took a swipe at the opposition for the criticisms levelled against him.
However, the Pakatan Harapan chairperson stated that despite all the criticisms, they could never call him a “thief”.
"They claim Anwar is cruel and oppresses the rakyat. But the one thing they will never say is that Anwar steals what belongs to the rakyat.
"And I’m glad that the rakyat has opened their eyes to this, especially the youth," he said during his closing speech of a Harapan rally tonight.
Earlier, Anwar (above), who is also the finance minister, claimed that if the rakyat knew of the previous government's dealings, he would never support them.
It is believed that he was referring to the previous Perikatan Nasional administration, led by Muhyiddin Yassin.
Earlier, some 4,000 people braved the rain in Alor Setar, Kedah, tonight for a chance to see Anwar at the state’s Madani rally.
Most have sought shelter under tents set up around the Dataran Stargate venue, though some came prepared with umbrellas and raincoats.
Anwar arrived later at 9pm as the rain subsided. He, along with Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, launched “unity” buses and trucks at 10.20pm.
According to Saifuddin, the two-tier buses will be used to campaign for the upcoming state elections, whereas the two trucks - one branding his face and the other Anwar's - will be used to provide aid to Kedah's citizens twice a month.
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also attended the rally, along with ministers Salahuddin Ayub and Fahmi Fadzil.
The carnival-like event had started in the afternoon. A clown was seen delighting children by offering them balloon animals.
Attendees were also given T-shirts with the “Malaysia Madani” logo, and vouchers to be used at food and drink stalls in the area.
It featured lucky draws and as well performances including by the famous singers Siti Nurhaliza and Amy Search, interspersed between political speeches by the government figures.
Earlier in the afternoon, Anwar, Salahuddin, Saifuddin and Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan had made a brief visit to the venue to greet the crowd.
They arrived at 5.30pm and left about 15 minutes later with promises to return tonight.
During this visit, the leaders made their way around the venue to shake hands with attendees, who tried to grab the premiers’ attention by chanting “Dato Seri” - Anwar’s honorific title.
The event organised by Pakatan Harapan secretariate and the state’s Harapan chapter is being held ahead of the federal government’s national-level Aidilfitri open house in the same city tomorrow.
Kedah Harapan chief Mahfuz Omar previously told Malaysiakini the event is for government leaders to explain policies to the grassroots and receive feedback, and is being fully funded by Harapan’s Kedah chapter.
The lucky draw prizes, including five motorcycles, were contributed by supporters, he said.
Tonight's rally ended with a prayer, a round of Hari Raya performances and fireworks.
The event was held ahead of Putrajaya's national-level Aidilfitri open house, to be held in the same city tomorrow morning. - Mkini
