Former Merbok MP Nor Azrina Surip was among the nine new commission members of the Water Services Commission (Span) appointed yesterday.
Together with chairperson Charles Santiago - appointed last month - there are now two former Pakatan Harapan MPs in the powerful commission which regulates water supply and sewerage services in Peninsula Malaysia and Labuan.
Nor Azrina (above) is an elected member of the PKR central leadership council. She is a one-term Merbok MP until she was unseated during the Nov 2022 parliamentary elections.
The other members of Span are former top civil servant Ching Thoo, corporate figure Hamidah Moris, corporate figure Loo Took Gee, academic Ahmad Jusoh, consumer rights activist Muhammad Sha'ani Abdullah, lawyer and former city councillor Derek John Fernandez, corporate figure Syed Mohamed Adnan Mansor Alhabshi and academic Mohd Azmi Ismail.
Their term will expire in 2025.
In a statement, Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the commission has a huge role to play in restructuring the water industry in order to help the country grow.
He also said the new line-up at Span has the capabilities to help the commission achieve its objectives because of the wide and varied experiences that they bring.
"I am confident that this new team is capable of driving Span to remain relevant in performing its function as an independent and respected water service regulatory body," said Nik Nazmi. - Mkini
