The Bukit Mertajam Magistrate Court today acquitted a Penang DAP Youth member of a charge of insulting behaviour after holding a protest against former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak last year.
Lim Zheng Han, 26, was granted a full discharge and acquittal after the man who filed a police report against him withdrew the report.
Lawyer RSN Rayer told Malaysiakini that the complainant Tan Wei Ho testified in court today that he lodged a report withdrawing his earlier report.
Following this, deputy public prosecutor Shakilah Dahari applied to withdraw the charges, which Magistrate Nurulrasyidah Mohd Aki allowed.
On March 25 last year, Lim and a group of DAP members were confronted by Najib’s supporters when the former carried banners that read “national embarrassment” during Najib’s visit to Bukit Mertajam.
The protesters were stopped from giving statements to the media and their banners were taken away by the former prime minister’s supporters, who also allegedly pushed one of the protesters.
Lim was subsequently charged in June last year for using insulting words with the intent to provoke a breach of the peace.
Rayer - who is also Jelutong MP - also told Malaysiakini he remarked in court today that the Attorney-General’s Chambers “should not waste precious court time” by prosecuting futile cases in the future.
