PETALING JAYA: An 84-year-old man who had been hospitalised for almost two weeks after consuming puffer fish died this morning.
Ng Chuan Sing’s death comes 11 days after his wife, Lim Siew Guan, 83, died from food poisoning after they both ate the fish which is said to contain the deadliest naturally occurring poisons.
Ng’s death was confirmed by his daughter Ng Ai Lee, Utusan Malaysia reported.
Chuan Sing, from Kluang, Johor, had been warded at the Intensive Care Unit at the Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital.
It was previously reported that he had bought the deadly fish from a fishmonger who regularly visited their village, not knowing that it contained dangerous toxins.
On March 30, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah reminded the public that it was prohibited to sell puffer fish that contained dangerous toxins.
The sale of puffer fish is controlled under the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority Act 1972 and Section 13 of the Food Act 1983. - FMT
