Executive members dominate Malacca legislature after new appointments

Executive members now dominate the relatively small Malacca legislature, following today’s announcement of naming 10 assemblypersons as deputy exco members.

This leaves only five government backbenchers in the 28-member legislature, of whom 26 are members of the new ruling coalition. In comparison, there are only two opposition assemblypersons.

The five backbenchers are Sulaiman Md Ali (Umno-Lendu), Muhammad Jailani Khamis (Umno-Rembia), Adly Zahari (Amanah-Bukit Katil), Lim Ban Hong (MCA-Kelebang), and Kerk Chee Yee (DAP-Ayer Keroh).

It should be noted that Adly is a deputy minister at the federal level, and thus, could not be appointed to the state cabinet.

Sulaiman had just stepped down as chief minister and set the stage for the ongoing shift in power.

Muhammad Jailani was also a former exco member under Sulaiman. He had openly criticised the change of power, making it awkward at best for the new Malacca Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh to co-opt him into his cabinet. Kerk was also a former exco member.

The list of the 10 new deputy exco members is as follows:

Khaidhirah Abu Zahar (Umno-Rim)
Zulkifli Mohd Zin (Umno-Taboh Naning)
Zaidi Attan (Umno-Serkam)
Low Chee Leong (DAP-Kota Laksamana)
Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem (Umno-Duyong)
Leng Chau Yen (DAP-Bandar Hilir)
Faizah Abd Azis (Umno-Sungai Rambai)
Zahari Abd Kalil (Umno-Durian Tunggal)
Rosli Abdullah (Umno-Kota Linggi)
Tuminah Kadi @ Mohd Hasim (Umno-Pantai Kundor)

Notably, Khaidhirah will likely have to relinquish her position as deputy speaker now that she is a deputy exco member.

In total, of the 10 exco members, seven are from Umno while MCA, MIC and DAP have one each. Among their deputies, eight are from Umno while two are from DAP.

The position of deputy exco member was introduced by then chief minister Idris Harun in 2013.

However, the position was abolished when Pakatan Harapan came to power in the state in 2018 and is not reinstated until today’s announcement. - Mkini
