Govt mulls flight ticket subsidies for varsity students

The government will look into providing flight ticket subsidies for university students.

Speaking at a dialogue session today at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), he said he would discuss the matter with Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

This comes after a student highlighted that most students, particularly those who hail from Sabah and Sarawak, are burdened with high ticket prices when travelling home from their universities.

Prime MInister Anwar Ibrahim

Anwar agreed that this was a prevalent issue faced amongst students.

“The transport minister recently said that there would be additional flights, but that is beyond the government’s scope. Unless we give students ticket subsidies, which will make sense.

“Perhaps we will negotiate this with airline companies.

“I will discuss this with the transport minister. This means that I accept it as an issue,” he said, at the session held in Shah Alam.

On March 14, Loke urged airline companies to increase the number of flights in an effort to prevent ticket prices from increasing during peak season.

This came after the government decided to not set ceiling prices for flight tickets.

Separately, Anwar said that he would discuss with Higher Education Minister Khaled Nordin to improve internet connectivity in university campuses across the country.

However, he did not specify whether it was for all public universities or just UiTM campuses.

Anwar added that he would also engage Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil to establish comprehensive internet connectivity nationwide.

Meanwhile, Anwar announced that he would expand the RM200 ePemula eWallet programme to all university students regardless of age.

It was previously announced that the ePemula eWallet programme, tabled in Budget 2023, was only applicable to youths aged between 18 to 20 years old.

However, a student highlighted today that the programme would not benefit university students who are aged between 21 and 23 years old. - Mkini
