Man, 61, allegedly beaten for complaining about partially cooked lemang in Melaka

MELAKA: An elderly man was allegedly beaten up by a roadside stall trader for complaining about a partially cooked lemang on the eve of Hari Raya.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the 61-year-old retired soldier lodged a report at the Bukit Baru police station on Friday (April 21) after the alleged assault at a lemang stall along Jalan Bukit Beruang Utama in Bukit Beruang, here.

"An argument sparked after the victim had confronted the 38-year-old seller for selling him the partially cooked delicacy at 8pm on Friday (April 21).

"The victim was allegedly hit with a hollowed bamboo stick that caused injuries to his left ear and right hand, requiring him to get medical treatment at the Melaka Hospital," he said when contacted on Saturday (April 22).

ACP Christopher Patit said the victim had bought the delicacy, which is a popular dish during Hari Raya, on Friday morning (April 21).

He said the victim found that the items he bought were partially cooked and decided to revisit the stall to ask for an exchange.

However, ACP Christopher Patit said the seller insisted that he sold fully cooked lemang and refused to entertain the victim’s request, resulting in an argument that led to the alleged assault.

He said the victim had also recorded a video of the stall and the delicacy that he bought.

ACP Christopher Patit added that the case has been classified under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means. - Star
