'Muhyiddin offered KJ candidacy in state polls'

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has offered former Umno leader Khairy Jamaluddin candidacy in the upcoming state polls if the latter decides to join Bersatu.

This was revealed by Bersatu information chief Razali Idris, who said the offer was made when Khairy visited Muhyiddin’s house after being sacked from Umno.

“During the meeting, Muhyiddin offered Khairy (above) to run in the state polls on Bersatu’s ticket if he was still interested in politics.

“However, a few conditions were set, among which, he has to become a Bersatu member first and the seat he will contest will be decided by the Perikatan Nasional (PN) leadership,” Utusan Malaysia reported Razali as saying today.

Khairy, who is a former health minister, has yet to respond to Muhyiddin’s offer and has asked for some time to decide, he added.

Razali, who is also Terengganu Bersatu chairperson, said he personally would welcome and accept Khairy as a Bersatu member based on the former minister’s reputation in politics.

“But Khairy has to abide by the party’s decision to place him wherever (as a candidate), whether in Selangor or Negeri Sembilan,” he said.

Razali also said that Bersatu has an open-door policy for any former Umno leaders if they can further strengthen the party.

“As we all know, many Umno leaders have been sacked from the party. If they can strengthen Bersatu, there is no harm in them joining us,” he said.

On Jan 28, the Umno supreme council sacked 44 members, including Khairy and former Selangor chief Noh Omar.

A number of other Umno leaders were also slapped with a six-year suspension. No reasons were given for the action. - Mkini
