Pro-Anwar group defends appointment of PKR MP to govt agency

PKR MP Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (right) can implement reforms, according to Otai Reformis, a pro-Anwar Ibrahim group.

PETALING JAYA: A pro-Anwar Ibrahim group has defended the appointment of a PKR MP as the non-executive chairman of a government agency, but advised Putrajaya against naming politicians with bad track records to such posts.

Otai Reformis 98 said Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh’s appointment was important for a fledgling unity government as he was someone who could carry out needed reforms, especially in combating graft.

The group’s deputy president Mustapa Mansor said without an “enforcer”, it would be difficult to implement reforms.

“It’s compulsory to have someone who understands the reform agenda and the Madani concept that the prime minister espouses,” he told FMT, referring to the government’s guiding principles.

Ledang MP Syed Ibrahim was appointed as the non-executive chairman of MDEC effective April 1.

Syed Ibrahim is the latest in a string of political appointments which have come under fire, especially from NGOs.

Other politicians appointed to top posts in government agencies include Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki (Mara chairman), Wanita Umno chief Noraini Ahmad (Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority chairman) and former Klang MP Charles Santiago (reappointed National Water Service Commission chairman).

DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook had previously said there was a need to differentiate between government-linked companies (GLCs) and regulatory bodies before criticising political appointments, adding that many “seem to have mixed up these two”.

Mustapa also vowed that his group would speak out against government appointees who had bad track records, saying it was pointless to appoint such individuals to these posts.

“The focus must be on one’s commitment and integrity,” he added. - FMT
