KOTA KINABALU: The public is advised to stay away from open spaces such as football fields when there is thunder and lightning to prevent accidents.
State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong, who is also the Sabah Natural Disaster Management Committee chairman, said this advice comes following the death of a 13-year-old boy who was struck by lightning when playing football in Papar on Tuesday (April 25).
He said in a statement on Wednesday (April 26) that the boy's friend - who was also struck - is now in a critical condition.
Safar said lightning strikes could hit a person in an open area and this could cause serious injuries, if not death.
“Please refrain from being in open spaces during these weather conditions to prevent unwanted incidents,” Safar said. - Star
