PETALING JAYA: Umno has denied claims it was applying “political pressure” in pushing for a royal pardon for its former president Najib Razak.

Party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the decision to ask the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to grant Najib a pardon was in accordance with legal procedures, Bernama reported.

He added that the party would adhere to legal procedures before making an appeal to the Pardons Board.

“It will be up to the Pardons Board,” Zahid was quoted as saying.

Earlier today, Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin accused Umno of using “political pressure” to push for the pardon.

Muhyiddin said there were certain procedures that had to be followed in granting pardons.

On Friday, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed that the party had asked the King to consider granting the former prime minister a pardon.

Asyraf also said the Umno Supreme Council would seek an audience with the King to present a memorandum on the matter.

Najib is currently serving his 12-year prison sentence after he was convicted of criminal breach of trust, abuse of power and money laundering involving RM42 million belonging to SRC International.

Earlier this week, Najib said he would seek to use the dissenting judgment by Federal Court judge Abdul Rahman Sebli to support his application for a royal pardon.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he is part of the Pardons Board that will review Najib’s application for a royal pardon. - FMT
