PETALING JAYA: China’s 2023 edition of its “standard map of China” does not impact Sarawak in any way, says the state’s premier, Abang Johari Openg.

He said the publication of the map did not comply with United Nations regulations and the outlining of China’s new maritime borders clearly did not abide by international maritime law.

The new map lays claim to almost the entire South China Sea, including areas lying off Sabah and Sarawak.

“China is a UN member and should have complied with its regulations,” Abang Johari was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.

“The Malaysian government has already stated that it does not recognise the map, and since we are part of Malaysia, that area belongs to us (Sarawak).”

On Wednesday, Wisma Putra said Malaysia does not recognise Beijing’s new map, which claimed maritime areas near Sabah and Sarawak as belonging to China. It also included areas in Brunei, Indonesia, Vietnam, India and the Philippines.

Foreign minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said yesterday that a protest note would be sent to China as part of the ministry’s standard practice in such disputes. - FMT
