MUALLIM: Four hundred and thirty three people from Kampung Chinggung in Slim River were evacuated when their homes were inundated by flood waters this evening.

The victims were relocated to a relief centre at Kampung Chinggung Multipurpose Hall starting from 7.30pm today.

Flood waters rose after a heavy downpour caused Sungai Behrang to burst its banks, causing water to overflow into low-lying areas.

A Perak Civil Defense Department spokesperson said the downpour since this afternoon caused the water level at the Sungai Behrang to rise and overspill into the low-lying village nearby.

"So far, 433 people from 85 families are taking temporary shelter at the Kampung Chinggung Multipurpose Hall.

"We are expecting more people to seek shelter here as it is still raining," he said.

Meanwhile, a 47-year-old mother and her 14-year-old son in Ipoh were injured after a tree fell on their car at Laluan Lapangan Permata 1, Taman Song Choon, due to heavy rains and thunderstorms.

Simpang Pulai Fire and Rescue Station operation chief Johari Mohamad said that the incident caused the duo to be trapped in the car.

Johari said firefighters received a distress call at 3.01pm, and a team of firemen from the station was dispatched to the scene.

"The boy and his mother were taken to a private hospital by passersby for further treatment," he said. - NST
