PARLIAMENT | In a rare show of solidarity, both government and opposition MPs have contributed to the Humanitarian Trust Fund for the People of Palestine to support the Palestinian cause.
The money from the fund, managed by Wisma Putra, was given to Palestinian Ambassador to Malaysia Walid Abu Ali in Parliament today.
At a press conference, Foreign Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said that five Malaysians - including a mother and her three children - reported to be trapped within the conflict zone are safe.
However, details of the evacuation process cannot be revealed for security purposes.
“Wisma Putra has kept on appealing to Malaysians to let us know if they are living there to register and let us know of their whereabouts
“So far we only have this information, that there are five Malaysians. There is one medical doctor - a Malaysian woman who is married to a Palestinian and her three children.
“We managed to talk to this doctor and they are okay... I was told that they went on a holiday and suddenly they were caught there,” he said.
He added that there have been no other reports involving other Malaysians
Zambry added that the government was cooperating with the Philippine embassy in Palestine as it is situated the closest to the conflict zone.
Earlier, he told the Dewan Rakyat that Malaysia was also committed to calling out regional and international bodies, such as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, to make a firm stand.
“When the West takes action with lightning speed and helps Ukraine in defending itself from Moscow's aggression, the Palestinian people continue to be marginalised without any defence or justice.
"This clearly deviates from universal humanitarian principles and international law. We were also proud when the world abolished apartheid in South Africa.
"Why is the apartheid policy of the Israeli regime allowed to continue to prevail and violate humanitarian norms?"
