Sarawak premier denies son will invest in MYAirline

Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg has denied a news report naming his son as a potential new investor in MYAirline Sdn Bhd, which announced it is suspending operations due to financial reasons.

Speaking in Kuching, he said the speculation could have been due to his son Abang Abdillah Izzarim attending the company’s recent dialogue session in Kuala Lumpur.

“No. What happened was that my son went there with his friend, and he attended the town hall session at that time. So they (the media) speculated (after) seeing (him) there.

"My son is put in a difficult position. All his (movements) are being scrutinised by the people. I think this is not fair," he was quoted as stating by Bernama.

Abang Johari also dismissed the report about the possibility of MYAirline becoming a Sarawak-owned airline.

He insisted that the state government is still focused on negotiations to acquire MASWings, a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines Bhd.

"We are focused on (the acquisition of) MASWings. (The takeover is) under negotiation now, and it is just about the details. That's all," he added.

‘Signifant financial pressures’

According to a previous report on Abang Abdillah, 45, following his appointment as an independent non-executive director of Berjaya Land Bhd in August, it was stated he started his career as a commercial pilot before moving into the world of technology and business.

He also took on the role of executive chairperson at Sarawak Consolidated Industries Bhd in June and currently holds the position of chairperson at Sarawak-based telecommunications company Irix Sdn Bhd (formerly known as PP Telecommunication Sdn Bhd).

Abang Abdillah also serves as a director at Cempaka Helicopter Corporation Sdn Bhd.

Barely a year after its maiden flight, MYAirline Sdn Bhd announced this morning that it is suspending operations, effective today, because of "significant financial pressures".

Passengers who waited to catch morning flights were greeted with empty MYAirline counters this morning at KLIA2.

In a statement at 5.30am, MYAirline advised its passengers not to proceed to the airport and urged those who required assistance to contact the company.

MYAirline said it had explored various partnerships and capital-raising options but was unsuccessful. - Mkini
