Top Perikatan Nasional leaders including PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin today joined thousands of protesters gathered near the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
According to reports, the PAS-led pro-Palestine rally started around 1.45pm on Jalan Binjai, Persiaran KLCC, marching a short distance to Jalan Tun Razak, the closest they were allowed by authorities to get to the US Embassy building.
PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden cited a crowd of more than 10,000 protesters.
“The gathering today is held after increasing brutalities of the Zionist regime, bombing hospitals, killing innocent civilians.
“And we’re sending this message to them so they can understand us. We want Palestine to be freed and given their rights,” the Alor Setar MP told reporters after the protest.
Media reports also indicated the presence of riot police.
Videos and images from the protest show the large crowd waving Palestinian flags and carrying anti-Zionist placards.
Aside from condemning the Zionist regime, increasing violence in Gaza has prompted global solidarity rallies and protests that also targeted the US administration’s role as a major supporter of Israel.
Yesterday, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian truce between Israel and Hamas and demanding aid access to Gaza.
A total of 120 countries including Malaysia voted in favour of the resolution, while 14 countries voted against including Israel and the United States. Another 45 countries including Canada abstained.
