Girl, 6, dies after neck caught in foldable table

PETALING JAYA: 

A six-year-old girl died after her neck was caught in between the metal parts of a foldable table at her home in Taman Perumahan Nibong Tebal, Penang.

Seberang Perai Selatan police chief Chong Boo Khim said the victim was found by her eldest brother with her neck trapped in the table at about 4.15pm yesterday.

She was rushed to Parit Buntar Hospital by her mother and confirmed dead by medical officers at 12.30am today. An autopsy determined the cause of death as lack of oxygen to the brain due to asphyxia.

Police are investigating the case under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for child neglect, which provides for a fine of up to RM50,000, or up to 20 years’ imprisonment, or both upon conviction.

Harian Metro reported that the victim was playing by herself at home when the incident occurred. - FMT
