SIC hosts races, but 'circuit girls' hired by companies, says Yeoh

KUALA LUMPUR: The presence of "circuit girls" in revealing attire at the MotoGP has nothing to do with the government, says Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.

She said "circuit girls" serve as brand ambassadors for companies involved in events and are selected by the organiser, Dorna Sports.

The Sepang International Circuit (SIC), Yeoh said, serves as the host and facilities provider for the MotoGP, which is organised by a Spain-based company.

She said this in a written reply to Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan (PN-Permatang Pauh), who asked about the government's plans to stop the use of circuit girls at motorsports events.

"The ministry takes note of Permatang Pauh's feedback. Cultural and religious sensitivities are important in a multicultural country like Malaysia."

Yeoh said the ministry, through the SIC, holds engagements with race organisers as part of efforts to improve the quality and details of events here.

The MotoGP is held in 21 countries, attracting millions of viewers from all over the world.

Last year, 184,923 people attended the MotoGP in Malaysia. Yeoh said a SIC study in 2022 found that the race contributes RM150 million to the economy.- NST
