TAMPARULI: A group of youths performing a lion dance for the Chinese New Year celebration fell into a large hole after the floor of a shop corridor on Jalan Bunga in this town suddenly collapsed today.
In the incident, which occurred around 11am, three lion dance performers escaped unhurt after being successfully rescued by their teammates, who pulled them out of the nearly one-metre-deep hole.
A resident, Rayner Ebi, 45, said the unexpected incident shocked the crowd watching the lion dance performance.
"Fortunately, none of the lion dance performers were injured, and they were successfully pulled out of the sinkhole by their teammates. This incident is a clear reminder of the importance of immediate maintenance of basic infrastructure in the town by the local authorities," he said.
Rayner, who is also an officer at the Tuaran member of parliament's service centre, rushed to the scene upon receiving news of the incident.
"The issue with the shop corridor floor had already been reported to the Tuaran District Council for safety measures before the incident occurred. However, accidents are unpredictable, and unfortunately, the collapse happened right during the lion dance performance," he added.
As a result, he urged the local authorities, especially the Tuaran District Council, to take immediate action to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
Rayner also advised pedestrians in the town to be cautious when passing through the affected area. - NST
