KUALA LUMPUR: Two men were killed in an accident involving three lorries and a pickup truck at Km10.4 of the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE), from the Ayer Panas toll heading towards Ampang, yesterday.
City Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the incident occurred at 3.43pm.
He said that one of the lorries had stopped in the middle lane due to engine failure before a pickup truck approaching from behind failed to control its vehicle and rammed into the rear of the lorry.
"Following that, another lorry stopped to provide assistance. However, a third lorry approaching from behind is believed to have failed to control its vehicle and collided with all the vehicles at the scene," he said in a statement.
He said the crash resulted in the deaths of two men, aged 52 and 53, at the scene.
"The victims were a local man who was a lorry driver and a pickup driver, a Bangladeshi national.
"Both were outside their vehicles at the time of the incident before becoming trapped and sustained severe head and body injuries."
Three other people— two men aged 43 and 35, and a 38-year-old foreigner— were injured and taken to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for further treatment.
Authorities said the accident was caused by the failure of the driver of the last lorry to control his vehicle, resulting in a collision with vehicles that had stopped in the middle lane.
"A breathalyser test conducted on the driver returned a negative result, while a urine screening test is still pending."
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.
