Authorities have launched an investigation into a “tokong” (shrine) in Jasin, Malacca, after Jawi inscriptions bearing the words “Allah” and “Bismillahirrahmanirrahim” were discovered on the structure following a report by a group of anglers.
State executive councillor for education, higher education and religious affairs Rahmad Mariman said an inspection conducted around the site found the shrine situated within a mangrove forest near the coast, adjacent to a parcel of privately owned, fenced land.
Preliminary checks indicated that the structure may have been in place for two to three years, although the Jawi inscriptions were only noticed on the day the report was made.
“Sensitive matters like this can spark controversy between races and religions. I have asked the police to maintain control while further action is being considered.
“I have also asked Serkam assemblyperson Zaidi Attan to liaise with the local authorities for enforcement action if the construction is found to have been carried out without approval,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
Rahmad added that immediate discussions had been convened with several parties, including the Malacca Islamic Religious Department (Jaim), the police and the Village Development and Security Committee.
He said Jaim and the police will undertake further investigations to identify those responsible.
“Jaim and the police must investigate further to find out how this could have happened, as we do not want this issue to trigger tension within the community.
“I want the landowner to personally inspect the condition of the area before any action is taken, as well as to verify whether the land falls under the coastal reserve.
“If it is within a reserve area, no construction can be carried out without approval from the relevant authorities,” he added. - Mkini
