A heated exchange broke out between PKR vice-president R Ramanan and Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim at the Johor PKR congress today.
Based on video excerpts of his speech, Ramanan (above) was heard alluding to former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli as an individual who has been “attacking” the party.
“When an individual from the party itself is attacking the party,” said Ramanan, who was onstage, prompting Hassan to interject, “This is a convention, not for an attempt to attack any particular individual!”
Ramanan attempted to continue, insisting he was not attacking anyone, but Hassan, speaking from the floor, refused to be silent.
“I know (this is) your floor! (But) This is the state of Johor! I’m a Johor MP!
“I don’t agree! Rafizi isn’t even here. Why attack him?” stressed Hassan.

Ramanan further responded, “It doesn’t matter that he (Rafizi) is not here. He’s the one attacking the party.”
“You (Hassan) should be protecting the party, YB. You should defend the party, that’s what I’m saying.
“You have to defend this party! This party is our house! If you (Rafizi) want to attack the party, do it from outside! That’s all I’m saying!” said the Sungai Buloh MP, and another PKR member was heard shouting, “Setuju!” (Agreed!)
“I may be new to this party compared to you, YB (Hassan), but I love this party. I love my president!” Ramanan further said, and the same voice from the floor shouted, “Sokong!” (Supported!)
Malaysiakini has contacted Hassan for comments.

‘Unfolding drama’
Yesterday, Rafizi, who has increasingly drifted apart from PKR, said he would not remain silent if he quit; instead, he would become more vocal and freer in expressing his views.
Separately, Rafizi told Malaysiakini today, “What happened in PKR is no longer of too much concern to me.”
“If the leadership continues to behave this way, it’s presenting an unfolding drama that continues to weaken the party,” said the Pandan MP.
PKR president Anwar Ibrahim was among the top party leaders at the congress in Johor Bahru, together with Johor PKR chief Zaliha Mustafa, party secretary-general Fuziah Salleh, party information chief Fahmi Fadzil, Women’s chief Fadhlina Sidek, and Youth chief Kamil Abdul Munim. - Mkini
