Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed the latest development in the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran following a 10-point plan proposed by Iran and positively received by the US.
He said the proposal augurs well for the restoration of peace and stability, not only in the region but also globally.
“It is earnestly hoped that the negotiation process will be conducted in good faith, with a firm resolve to seek a lasting resolution to the issues currently facing the region.
“Peace talks cannot succeed if the proceedings are cloaked in deception and double-dealing,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Anwar stressed that the 10-point plan must be translated into a comprehensive peace deal, not just for Iran, but also for Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen.
He further emphasised the need for all parties concerned to ensure an end to the genocide and dispossession of the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza.
The prime minister also expressed his appreciation to Pakistan and its Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for the tireless and courageous diplomatic efforts that helped bring about the current development.
“Pakistan's willingness to speak to all sides, without fear or favour, reflects the highest traditions of Muslim solidarity and international responsibility,” he said, adding that Malaysia stands ready to support and complement all efforts in this regard.
Anwar also called on the international community to ensure unimpeded humanitarian access to all civilian populations affected by the war.
“Let this be a turning point towards lasting peace. The world cannot afford for it to be anything less,” he said.
Framework for negotiations
Iran said early today that the US has “in principle” accepted a 10-point proposal aimed at ending the war, Anadolu Ajansi reported, citing Iran’s state-run Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said the proposal would serve as the framework for negotiations to finalise a broader agreement, although full details were not publicly disclosed.
According to IRIB, the proposal includes guarantees of non-aggression against Iran, continued Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz, and recognition of Tehran’s right to uranium enrichment, as well as the lifting of all US primary and secondary sanctions.
It also includes the termination of resolutions by the United Nations Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency Board of Governors, payment of compensation, withdrawal of US combat forces from the region, and an end to hostilities across all fronts, including in Lebanon.
US President Donald Trump said earlier that Washington would suspend attacks on Iran for two weeks, describing Tehran’s proposal as a “workable basis” for negotiations.
