Gerakan Media Merdeka and the National Union of Journalists Malaysia (NUJM) have urged authorities to explain alleged actions taken against three journalists on scene at a karaoke centre in Cheras, a day after a reported riot that involved more than 50 masked individuals.
The groups were responding to Sin Chew Daily’s report yesterday that the trio, who were covering a follow-up to the incident, were ordered to delete all photos and videos taken at the scene.
“Geramm and NUJM call for an explanation from the relevant authorities, in line with the principle that journalism is not a crime and the need to protect journalists’ rights in carrying out their duties,” said the groups in a joint statement.
Sin Chew reported that two plainclothes police officers approached a journalist, had her mobile phone inspected, and took her into the premises for questioning over recordings made while the forensic team was carrying out its duties.
The journalist was also reportedly instructed to delete all photos and videos before being released a few minutes later.
Subsequently, an investigating officer also allegedly asked two other journalists to delete their recorded material and took photos of their press cards.

Separately, DAP Youth in a statement said such actions risk eroding the public’s fundamental right to freedom of expression as well as journalists’ rights to carry out their reporting duties.
“DAP Youth stresses that in a democratic country, freedom of expression and media freedom are core values that cannot be compromised.
“Media practitioners are entitled to basic freedoms in performing their duties, including the right to cover, record, and report on public affairs, as long as it does not disrupt public order,” it said.
“The role of media practitioners not only reflects professional responsibility but also serves as a pillar in delivering truth and upholding checks and balances in a country.
“As such, the police’s actions in this case clearly overstep boundaries and infringe on media freedom,” they said.
On Monday, it was reported that attackers forced their way into a karaoke centre using a lorry in broad daylight before causing extensive damage and fleeing in several cars.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said yesterday that police acted swiftly to arrest 12 people. - Mkini
