PETALING JAYA:
Melaka chief minister Ab Rauf Yusoh has rejected the resignation of Dr Akmal Saleh as a state executive councillor, more than two months after the Umno Youth chief announced his intention to step down from the position.

Rauf said it was his prerogative to accept or reject the Merlimau assemblyman’s resignation from the exco post.

“I wish to inform that Akmal submitted his resignation letter shortly after making the announcement.

“However, I have decided to reject the resignation so that he can continue serving as a member of the state executive council,” he was quoted as saying by Harian Metro in Jasin.

In January, Akmal announced his intention to resign from the Melaka exco post to “fight DAP to the end”.

He said this at the Umno Youth general assembly, adding that he had discussed the matter with party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Rauf.

He also said he would remain as Umno Youth chief, as Zahid and Rauf had advised him that “a warrior never deserts his friends”.

Akmal is the state executive councillor for rural development, agriculture and food security.

The outspoken Umno Youth chief has frequently locked horns with DAP leaders over various issues despite the two parties being allies in the federal and state governments. - FMT
