KUALA LUMPUR: The government has agreed to introduce a Post-Maternity Leave Allowance (EPCB) under the Employment Insurance System Act, a move expected to benefit more than 132,000 female workers nationwide.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the allowance would provide financial assistance for up to 30 days of additional leave taken after the completion of the existing 98-day maternity leave period.
He said the initiative reflects the government's commitment to recognising the vital role of women and mothers in the country.
"I understand the challenges of raising children… I have six children myself.
"Therefore, as a progressive step, the government has agreed in principle to introduce the Post-Maternity Leave Allowance (EPCB) under the Employment Insurance System Act.
"This allowance will provide financial assistance for up to 30 days (one month) of additional leave after the end of the 98-day maternity leave period.
"This will involve amendments to the Employment Insurance System Act," he said in his speech at the National Labour Day celebration here today. - NST
