Spare us the bureaucratese, disclose Azam Baki's wealth

YOURSAY | “When there's a will to disclose, there's a way, otherwise it's just excuses.”

PARLIAMENT | Azalina: Govt cannot disclose Azam Baki's shareholdings

A Little Bit Crazy: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said, I agree that, the most appropriate action might not be to announce the shareholdings of former MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki publicly, because personal information must be protected by law.

But when Azam was the head of MACC, he liked to call press conferences, publicly announce this and that, raid suspects' houses and offices, showing cash on the table, freeze the suspects' bank accounts, detain suspects and force some of them to wear orange suits, even though no concrete evidence was secured.

Can the new MACC chief do the same to Azam now? Freeze his bank accounts and raid his homes to find more evidence?

Justice must be done fairly and squarely, no double standards.

Don't hide behind any personal information acts. Azam is not a constitutional monarch; he can be charged in court as he has no immunity.

To do otherwise by pushing the case to the chief secretary of the government is not the right way to show us that Malaysia is a lawful country; it only makes the rakyat suspect that some trading is behind closed doors, so we must vote for the change of the government again and again.

In 2018, the people voted out BN and former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak went to jail.

Come 2028, shall we vote down all unity government component parties to seek more truths, nothing but the truths of all suspicious cases?

EmEmKay: The government keeps beating around the bush on this matter.

I remember very clearly - at the height of this issue, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke raised the matter in the cabinet meeting and proposed a royal commission of inquiry into Azam’s shareholdings and the “corporate mafia” scandal.

But he didn't get the backing of his own cabinet colleagues. Now here we are again, another day, another statement from Azalina, essentially saying the same thing: "cannot disclose."

If the investigation has truly been conducted independently, transparently, and professionally then what is there to hide?

Telling us that share transaction records are "not public documents" or "protected under the law" is just a smokescreen.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim himself said the findings were presented to cabinet - so at least the cabinet knows. Why can't the rakyat know?

Don't treat Malaysians as fools. We know how the system works. When there's a will to disclose, there's a way. When there isn't, any excuse will do.

GP2025: Bureaucratese!

This puppet falls back onto bureaucratic language when it’s convenient for her and the government and hides behind the Agong, when she doesn’t want to be accountable to the people.

In other words, plain lying.

On all matters of governance, this government has failed to be accountable to the people. It has, instead, resorted to deception and hypocrisy to legitimise its existence.

In a democracy where the people know their constitutional rights, this government would never have been formed, and, if formed, would have been thrown out a long time ago.

It survives because the majority of voters don’t know their constitutional rights and are unable to demand their representatives fight for those rights, which has led to MPs, including the opposition, being dictated by unelected forces.

This entire government should be thrown out!

PinkJaguar7289: It now looks like DAP has egg all over its face. Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong once thundered in Parliament, “Choose Azam or us,” but today the government refuses to disclose the shareholding findings while Azam remains comfortably within the establishment.

So where is Khoo’s supposedly fearless voice now?

DAP leaders make tremendous noise when the cameras are rolling, but when their own government shuts the door on transparency, they suddenly become empty vessels - loud in Parliament, yet powerless and silent when accountability truly matters.

Johor voters should think carefully before choosing leaders who rely on sweet talk and fearmongering about “Chinese political power” instead of integrity, accountability and results.

Koel: Azam’s shareholdings not to be made public. Allegations against Bestinet not to be investigated. Questions about littoral combat ship not addressed. These are only some of the issues pending.

Can you blame the public for believing that someone or many people very high up and who have been in the game for very long are probably being protected from public scrutiny, Azalina?

Are we seeing the same sort of establishment pushback on all these matters that we saw with 1MDB when important persons in your party needed to be protected, Azalina?

Wayang: So in future, asset declarations of politicians and public servants, even if very suspicious, can also be hidden from the public because protected by privacy laws?

So all just wayang (theater) only?

Freethinker: Azam is not just a regular person. His conduct and wealth are related to public confidence towards MACC.

Investigation into his wealth must be made public, and the government must provide its stand on the findings as well. - Mkini
