On Johor campaign trail, Zahid announces cabinet reviews

JOHOR POLLS | The cabinet has agreed to review the implementation of the e-invoicing system following BN’s concerns over its impact on businesses and the rising cost of living, said Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

In his speech while campaigning for his coalition’s Kota Iskandar incumbent Pandak Ahmad last night, Zahid said the decision was made at the cabinet meeting earlier yesterday after a proposal by BN received the support of all ministers.

“The government has agreed to review the e-invoicing system,” he said to cheers from hundreds gathered at the Iskandar Puteri BN Command Centre.

The e-invoice first applied to businesses with annual revenue exceeding RM100 million from Aug 1, 2024, before expanding to companies with turnover above RM25 million from Jan 1, 2025, those above RM5 million from Jul 1, 2025, and businesses with annual revenue of up to RM5 million from Jan 1 this year.

Zahid said BN had also raised concerns over the possibility of higher prices for goods, adding that the government was closely monitoring external developments that could further increase inflationary pressures.

He said he was particularly worried that unresolved international developments, including the violation of an agreement involving the United States and Iran, could lead to higher global oil prices and force the government to shoulder a larger subsidy bill.

EPF for foreign workers

Speaking to reporters, the BN chairperson said foreign workers' contributions to the Employees Provident Fund will also be reviewed.

“On the e-invoicing system, I personally brought the matter to the cabinet, and the decision reached was that its implementation should be reviewed so that the Finance Ministry can reconsider the burden on companies.

“Likewise, the two percent EPF contribution by companies employing foreign workers will also be reviewed.

“This means the requests made by BN have been taken into consideration by the cabinet,” he said.

The mandatory EPF contribution for foreign workers took effect on Oct 1 last year, with contributions payable from November.

Under the policy, employers and foreign employees are each required to contribute two percent of the employee’s monthly wages.

Zahid also credited MCA president Wee Ka Siong for a separate proposal yesterday that led to a cabinet decision to reinstate a 10-year tax exemption for TAR College.

‘Vote for Tok Pandak’

While stumping for Pandak, Zahid told supporters he was confident in BN’s decision to have the Kota Iskandar incumbent defend his seat, as he said he would only select candidates who are liked by the constituents.

The Umno president revealed that he and Pandak didn’t always see eye to eye in the past, but despite their differences, Zahid said what mattered was that BN’s choice would be someone working hard for the people.

“Tok Pandak used to say all kinds of things about me; he even called me ‘harimau sarkas’ (circus tiger), but that was in the past. If it wasn’t for this ‘harimau sarkas’, he wouldn’t have been fielded,” he joked as the crowd clapped and cheered.
