PARLIAMENT | The government has refuted a claim that fugitive businessperson Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, had entered the country last year for a secret negotiation to write off 1MDB-related debts.
This came during a parliamentary oral question at the Dewan Rakyat this morning, where Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong responded to Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman's (Muda-Muar) query on the matter.
"Thank you, YB Muar. I hereby deny the allegation," Liew said.
Earlier, Sarawak Report had claimed that Low, who is wanted by authorities for his part in the 1MDB scandal, played a key role in "secret negotiations between China and Malaysia" over 1MDB-related debts late last year.
The whistleblower site, which is blocked in Malaysia, quoted sources who claimed that meetings involving Low even took place in Kuala Lumpur, purportedly under the "protection" of a Chinese delegation.
The report alleged that the talks were to resolve Malaysia’s 1MDB-related issues with China, particularly Beijing’s alleged role in helping imprisoned former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak cover up the scandal.
Following this, the police on May 16 said they would investigate to verify the claims. - Mkini
