Sikh veterans association suspended pending forensic audit

Veterans' affairs department director-general Semaon Marjuki orders audit of the Malaysian Armed Forces Sikh Veterans Association in response to complaints of misappropriation of funds.

By way of its letter dated Aug 21, the veterans’ affairs department has suspended the Malaysian Armed Forces Sikh Veterans Association pending an independent audit.
PETALING JAYA:
The veterans’ affairs department (JHEV) has suspended an association under its jurisdiction and ordered the body to carry out a forensic audit on its financial affairs following complaints of misappropriation of funds.

In a letter dated Aug 21 to the Malaysian Armed Forces Sikh Veterans Association (MAFSVA), JHEV director-general Semaon Marjuki has given the body four months to commission an independent audit and submit a report to the department.

“We received allegations of financial irregularities in the management of the association’s funds and a lack of transparency in its reports. JHEV takes this matter seriously as it has the potential to damage the image of veterans if left unchecked.

“As such, we are appointing a certified audit firm, Mohd Noh & Co, with the cost to be borne by the association. The firm will carry out the forensic audit professionally,” he said in the letter sighted by FMT.

In the meantime, Semaon said MAFSVA is barred from carrying out any activities, such as its annual or emergency meetings, pending the conclusion of the matter.

However, he said the department will make an exception to enable the association to meet to officially appoint the auditor and make the necessary payments required for the purpose.

“At the same time, JHEV will not prevent any aggrieved parties from lodging police reports if necessary. However, it is strongly advised that this matter be resolved amicably in accordance with existing rules,” he said.

When contacted, MAFSVA president Hardial Singh and a JHEV spokesman declined to comment. - FMT
