A weak 3.4-magnitude earthquake struck Temenggor, Gerik, Perak at 12.06am today, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
In a post on X, MetMalaysia said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10km, with its epicentre located at 5.5 degrees North and 101.3 degrees East, about 9km north-east of Hulu Perak.
Tremors were felt around Gerik, it said, adding that there was no tsunami threat to Malaysia.
MCA Youth deputy chairperson Mike Chong has called on the Transport Ministry to take immediate action over reports of airfares between Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak soaring by more than 200 percent, saying the issue goes beyond expensive festive travel when Malaysians are unable to return home for family emergencies or work.
In a statement, Chong called for the introduction of an emergency or “compassionate fare”, with airlines reserving a limited number of reasonably priced seats for genuine emergencies such as bereavements and urgent medical needs, subject to simple supporting documents.
Mike Chong He also urged the ministry to investigate fare increases exceeding 200 percent to determine whether they are caused by limited capacity, fewer flights, aircraft availability or dynamic pricing, and to work with airlines to add flights
Chong’s fourth recommendation was for the ministry to publish regular airfare data, including average fares, seat capacity, flight frequency and price movements on major Peninsular-Sabah-Sarawak routes, to improve consumer transparency.
He also called for a review of existing maximum-airfare initiatives. - Mkini
