A senior official says most luxury car owners are reluctant to go to JPJ offices to renew their road tax because they were blacklisted for other offences.
This was revealed by JPJ senior director of enforcement Kifli Ma Hassan who said a total of 3,790 luxury vehicles worth an estimated RM550 million were seized by the department under Op Luxury since June 2025, Bernama reported.
He said 785 vehicles were seized between June and December 2025, while another 3,005 were seized between January and Sept 26, this year.
He said Negeri Sembilan recorded the highest number of seizures with 469 vehicles, followed by Selangor (410), Kuala Lumpur (382), Johor (367) and Penang (357).
“Some luxury vehicle owners said they were reluctant to go to JPJ offices to renew their road tax because they had been blacklisted for previous offences.
“What is puzzling is that lower-income groups can come forward to renew their road tax, while owners of luxury vehicles from the T20 group give various reasons for not doing so, resulting in their vehicles being seized,” he told a press conference at the JPJ office in Kota Bharu, Kelantan today.
According to Kifli, JPJ found that an estimated 20% of the luxury vehicle owners were cosmetic entrepreneurs, influencers and businesspeople.
He said JPJ would continue Op Luxury to ensure that all road users comply with the law, regardless of the price or type of vehicle, or the status of its owner.
“Being able to afford a luxury vehicle comes with the responsibility to comply with the law.
“Owners and drivers are responsible for ensuring that all vehicle and driving documents remain valid, and that their vehicles meet all requirements before being driven on the road,” he was quoted as saying.
Last December, it was reported that the luxury car brands seized by JPJ included Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Ferrari, and Rolls-Royce. - FMT
