UiTM Holdings probe ongoing but complex, says MACC

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) investigation into RM157 million in losses suffered by UiTM Holdings Sdn Bhd over four years is still ongoing due to the complexity of the case.

MACC chief commissioner Abd Halim Aman said the investigation involves complex technical matters though the anti-graft agency was also awaiting further instructions from prosecutors.

Among the issues being investigated is a RM42 million payment linked to a 50MW solar project in Gambang, Pahang.

According to Halim, the money was allegedly used for purposes unrelated to the solar project while the payment was made without the approval of the UiTM Holdings’ board.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009, which involves using one’s office or position for gratification.

“We will make every effort to complete the investigation as soon as possible, independently and fairly,” he said in a statement.

He added that MACC would also examine whether there were other issues, including weaknesses in the way UiTM Holdings was managed, following concerns raised by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim yesterday.

In 2023, MACC launched an investigation into UiTM Holdings’ losses totalling RM157 million for 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021.

At the time, MACC said it was examining several investments made by the company for possible bribery, abuse of power or misuse of funds.

Yesterday, Anwar ordered Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) to review the governance and management of its investment arm over the millions of losses suffered. - FMT
